The Finn surprised and dethroned the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel, while Hamilton and Leclerc had problems.

In a weekend in which Ferrari looked to have an upper hand, Valtteri Bottas showed up at the last runs of FP2 and headed the Friday sessions, lapping just 27 thousands of a second quicker than four-time champion Sebastian Vettel. Third, surprising after a poor performance at the Bahrain Grand Prix, was Max Verstappen with his Red Bull.

While their team-mates were fighting for the best times, Hamilton and Leclerc had several problems. The Mercedes five time champion suffered with the balance of his car, even spinning once, and finished far from the top on the timesheet, while the young Charles Leclerc was sidelined for much of the second session with mechanical problems.

In the intermediate pack Renault and Mclaren headed the times with ease, while Haas disappointed with their two drivers at the end of the times table.

The Official Classification for the 1,000th Formula One Grand Prix in China takes place this Saturday (04/13).
