The Finn made good use of the strong pace over the weekend to secure his seventh career pole.

The championship leader Valtteri Bottas made history by setting pole position for the 1,000th Grand Prix in Formula 1 history. His team-mate Lewis Hamilton was just behind, only 27 thousandths of a second slower than the Finn and completed the all Mercedes’ front row.

Ferrari will start from the second row, with Vettel just ahead of Leclerc. Both drivers were dissatisfied with their laps, with errors in the last section of the track that left them with no chance to fight with Mercedes. In the race the expectation of the two teams is a close and competitive pace.

Renault and Haas remained at the top of the middle pack, dominating the 4th and 5th rows, respectively. Mclaren, who showed up strong in the free practices, disappointed and did not get out of Q2 with their two drivers.

Starting on the last row of the grid will be Antonio Giovinazzi of Alfa Romeo, who had problems in the engine and was unable to leave the garage, and Alexander Albon of Toro Rosso, who hit the barriers hard in the third free practice and left his team with no time to get his car ready.
